Bio

Robert W. Benes of Waverly, Nebraska February 24, 1929 - April 22, 2019 Robert is the son of Andrew L and Josephine (Hajek) Benes and was born February 24, 1929. He was the 5th out of 8 children consisting of 5 boys and 3 girls. Some of his favorite times were playing hide and seek and riding their pony. He went to a country school near their farm by Valparaiso and completed the 10th grade at Valparaiso High School. With the boys all taking an interest in farming the family moved from Valparaiso to a farm near Lincoln in 1950 so that they would have more farm ground. Around this time his Dad went back to work for Olson Construction and Robert and his brothers took care of the farming. Robert also worked for about 4 years at the Burlington Shops in Havelock and then drove a truck for Johnson Construction for about 4 years. But farming was Robert's love and after being a truck driver, he went back to farming. Robert said he liked farming very much. He also raised cows and pigs. While at the Waverly Care Center, if he woke up in the middle of the night, the aides and nurses said Robert would often ask them if they were going to go out and work at the farm with him. In 1974 he bought his own place on North 1st street. With the help of his brother's and sister's families they fixed up the house. Robert grew milo and corn, and raised cattle, and hogs. He liked to hunt, fix equipment, and weld. In his young adult years Robert loved to go to dances. He enjoyed having a good time and had several friends he would get together with. He was always a big hit with the nieces and nephews because he enjoyed entertaining them. One of the nephews' favorite memory is when he piled about 11 of them in his car and took them over to a buffalo farm to see the buffalo. A tight squeeze but a great memory. In 1980 he and his brother Jerome lived together at Robert's 1st street house. They row cropped and raised cattle and hogs. Robert would help his brother Daniel sometimes if Daniel was on vacation or baling hay. Robert enjoyed life on the farm very much. In 2013 brother Jerome passed away. He had been taking care of Robert by testing his insulin, taking him to Church, making meals, and grocery shopping. After Jerome's death, Brother Daniel and wife, Dorothy took Robert in for a while but eventually he moved to the Waverly Care Center. He wasn't too sure about living at the Waverly Care Center at first. However, when you are used to your brother's cooking (which consisted of oatmeal and mixed vegetables for most meals), he soon realized he now had a variety of tasty meals, and wonderful nurses and aides; (the majority females) to care for him, he decided it wasn't too bad at the Waverly Care Center. He had become a favorite to many at the Waverly Care Center. Happy with anything, never demanding, never complaining, always grateful. Robert had led a very humble life. A life of 90 years. Rest in peace Uncle Robert and thank you for your example of a humble and grateful life. We will always remember your smile, that twinkle in your eye, and your subtle humor.
