Alfred J. “Al” Kosmicki, 67, of Grand Island, NE, died on Saturday, December 25, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society, Wood River, NE, surrounded by his family, after suffering a stroke six years ago and a short bought with cancer. Services will be Saturday, January 1, 2011, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church. It was Mr. Kosmicki’s wish to be cremated. The Rev. Harold R. Kurtenbach, Rev. Charles L. Torpey, Rev. James J. Janovec will concelebrate. Visitation will be Friday, December 31, 2010 from 3 – 6 p.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church with a vigil service at 6:00 p. m. Curran Funeral Chapel is assisting the family. Al was born February 7, 1943 at Loup City, Nebraska. He is the son of Steve & Alice (Lewandowski) Kosmicki. Survivors of the immediate family include his wife of 47 years, Judy Kosmicki, of Grand Island, NE Three sons and two daughters-in-law: Jim & Amy Kosmicki of Grand Island, NE Eugene Kosmicki of Grand Island, NE Jacob & Andrea Kosmicki of Topeka, KS Two daughters & sons-in-law: Rosemary & Mike Holmberg of Central City, NE Jodi & Steve Stauffer of Phillips, NE One brother & sister-in-law: Larry & Chris Kosmicki of Boelus, NE Three sisters & two brothers-in-law: Marlene & Richard Schmidt of Grand Island, NE Rose & Bill Dixson of St. Paul, NE JoAnn & the late Ray Oseka of Grand Island, NE Others left to cherish his memory include his grandchildren: Anthony & Rachel Winget, Monica Winget, Erica Burton, Ethan Winget, Nathan & Elliott Kosmicki, Emma, Henry & Charlie Kosmicki, Steven, Melinda, Alexa & Kyla Stauffer. Great grandsons: Andrew & Brett Winget and numerous nieces & nephews and in-laws. Al grew up and received his education in Sherman & Howard County, graduating from Boelus High School in 1961. He attended Kearney College for 1 ½ years. He married Judy James on December 28, 1963 at North Platte, NE. They lived in Cairo, NE for 18 years before moving to Grand Island in 1981. Al was a self employed carpenter throughout his life. He was also employed at the Ordinance Plant, Grand Island Veterans Home in the Occupational Therapy woodworking program and was a custodian for Grand Island Central Catholic. He continued his education at Central Community College completing his degree in 1994. Al was instrumental in the construction of Resurrection Catholic Church and was a lifelong blood donor. Al loved attending his children’s & grandchildren’s school & sport functions. He enjoyed playing the accordion and dancing, especially to polkas. He was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Cursillo, and taught Teen Group CCD for several years. He was a card club member for over 30 years and he & Judy were the first couple in Hall County to make Marriage Encounter.
