Bio

Ethel Irene Whitmore, daughter of William and Emma Whitmore, was born near Friend, Saline county, Nebr., on November 23, 1885. She moved with her family to Surprise, Nebr., where she received her education, graduating from the Surprise high school. She joined the Surprise Baptist church early in girlhood where she was an ardent worshiper. She taught a Sunday School class and was church organist for a number of years. She was married to Olaf Lewis on June 6, 1906. To this union were born four children, two daughters, Mrs. Mildred Abele, Seward, Nebr., and Mrs. Evelyn Rolenc, Ulysses, Nebr., two sons, Devon Lewis, Utica, Nebr., and Leonard Lewis, Gresham, Nebraska. Besides these she is survived by eleven grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Eva Hess, Henry, Nebr., and Mrs. Fern Millard, Surprise, Nebr.; two brothers, Howard Whitmore, Gresham, Nebr., and Clyde Whitmore, Octavia, Nebr., and a host of other relatives and friends. In 1923 she transferred her membership to the Utica Methodist church after having moved to that vicinity. She was a loving wife, helpful mother and kind grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. She passed away at her home after a lingering illness at the age of 57 years, 1 month and 4 days, with a smile on her face and a prayer on her lips. Funeral services were held at Utica December 29, 1942, with burial in the Utica cemetery. Blue Valley Blade, Seward, NE, Thur, Jan 7, 1943
