Lillian Louise Carlson, age 93, of Brainerd, MN, passed away on Tuesday, December 22, 2015 at Woodland Good Samaritan Society in Brainerd, MN. Lillian was born on January 3, 1922 in Brainerd, MN to Otto and Marian (Behme) Kretzman. After high school, she worked as a nurse’s aide at Brainerd’s St. Joseph’s Hospital. With the onset of World War II, she was hired as part of the paper fanning crew, then worked in the shipping department at the mill, known then as Northwest Paper, replacing the men who’d gone off to war. When the men returned and the women were let go, Lillian trained at St. Joseph’s Hospital, and worked as an LPN from 1945-1957. When Potlatch Paper began hiring women again, Lillian was one of the first hired, becoming a supervisor in the finishing room for 11 years, then a scheduler for 100s of mill employees until her retirement at age 78 in 2003. Lillian was a devout Catholic, attending St. Francis Catholic Church daily after she retired, until she was no longer able to physically attend services. Over the years she supported a number of Catholic charities through donations. Bowling was Lillian’s favorite sport. Learning the game at age 18, she was in a variety of leagues, earning a respectable 165 average. Into her 90s, even with reduced vision and maneuverability, she cherished her time with the women of the Kahoutek League, who bowled together Friday mornings. Other hobbies included crocheting intricate table cloths of fine thread and doll dresses that she gave as gifts. When her sight began to fade, she would still crochet by feel. Known as a hard worker, a good homemaker, and a caring friend, mother and grandmother, she will be greatly missed. Lillian is survived by her son, Allen Carlson (Meg Douglas), Brainerd, MN; grandchildren, Cindie Goedker, Brainerd, MN, Lori Carlson (Mike Bleker), Madison, WI; great-grandchildren, Kaycee and Alex Goedker. She is preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Lloyd, Allen; and sister, Betty Glasgow. Lillian’s life will be celebrated in a service on January 3, 2016 at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home-BRAINERD CHAPEL at 4:00 P.M. with visitation one hour before the service. Interment will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2016 at 9:00AM at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.
