Sidney Cotterill Dies at Sturgis STURGIS - A long-time Sturgis resident with a lengthy list of citations from World War I died Wednesday. Dead is Sidney Cotterill, who had served as service officer for Butte County and had worked in the State Employment office at Belle Fourche. Final rites are planned Tuesday at 9 a. m. at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Msgr. Leo Feuerbach officiating. Burial will be in Black Hills National Cemetery under direction of the Anderson and Son Funeral Home. Military rites will be conducted by the Sturgis and Belle Fourche posts of the American Legion. Rosary services are tentatively planned for Monday night at the funeral home. Cotterill was born in 1886 in Sydney, Australia, and moved to Canada with his parents, where he received his education. He served with the Royal Mounted Police Force before enlisting in the U. S. Army in 1909 at Fort Meade. In 1913 he worked for the Homestake Mining Company at Lead, and then joined the Canadian Army in 1914. Cotterill served in Europe, where he was wounded in action. He was cited five times for bravery under fire, receiving two decorations from the king of England and two from the French government. Cotterill spent two years in an Army hospital in England and was discharged in 1919. He was married at Sturgis in 1913 to Tilly Milek, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Mike McQuirk of Sturgis, and a brother living in Toronto, Canada.
