Ruth Elaine Arends, daughter of Felix and Ella (Kraemer) Geide was born September 7, 1923 in Sioux Falls, SD. She graduated from Monroe High School in 1941 and attended Dickenson Secretarial School in Sioux Falls. On April 15, 1945, she married Arnold Arends at Immanuel Lutheran Wellington Township Church, rural Parker, SD. Shortly after the ceremony they left for San Diego and lived there for eight years. During this time, she worked at Federal Housing in San Diego and Lutheran Welfare. Upon their return to South Dakota, they bought a farm near Wall Lake and lived there until Arnold passed away in 2009. For the last nine and one-half years, Ruth has lived in Pierre, and she has been cared for by her daughter, Sherrie and family. Ruth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church active in LWML, sang in the Minnehaha County Extension Chorus, and a 4-H leader for many years. She enjoyed playing the piano and organ and was still taking organ lessons in her 80’s. Ruth and Arnold were avid gardeners, and Ruth loved growing flowers around her house and sharing perennials. She liked to read, collect recipes, as well as using the recipes for her family. She was an excellent cook, baker, and preserved dozens of jars of produce each year. A favorite pastime was visiting her families in Pierre, Watertown, and Iowa and recording those precious moments in the many photos she had taken. She was a shrewd shopper and loved to travel. Ruth’s greatest love was her family and the time they spent with her. Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Allan (Jan) Arends of Lead, SD; Lorrie (Doug) Bacon of Humboldt, IA; Sherrie (Ray) Tracy, Pierre, SD; as well as six grandchildren, Nicole (Curt) Kranz of Watertown, SD; Casey (Angie) Arends of Watertown, SD; Tyler (Amanda) Bacon of Johnston, IA; Tara (Seth) Dencklau of Humboldt, IA; Heather (Ryan) Sandve of Tolstoy, SD; and Shannon (David Newman) Fines of Ipswich, SD., and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Earle (Connie) Geide, Hartford, SD; sister, Jean Gregerson, Boulder, CO; sister, Donna Rae (George) Vogt, Hartford SD and numerous nieces, nephews and beloved friends. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, of 64 years; parents, Felix and Ella Geide; parents-in-laws, Herman and Gertrude Arends; sister, Lila Mae Anderson and infant brother, Clair Geide. A memorial service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, January 26, 2019 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hartford, SD. - Heritage Funeral Home
