Bio
Evelyn Clara Mesecke Whitehead of Sweeny was born in Needville, Texas, on January 6, 1930, to Robert & Hilda Engelhardt Mesecke. She passed away on Friday, January 18, 2019, at Houston Hospice. Evelyn was a member of the First Baptist Church of Old Ocean (now New Shores Church), where she loved holding all the babies in the church nursery where she served for many years. She watched and aided a generation of babies to grow up there and she was “Nanny” to many of those children. She considered this a joy, not a job. Evelyn most of all loved being Nanny to her grandchildren and would cease any other activities to play when they were with her. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, H.R. “Bud” Whitehead, and is survived by her daughters, Cheryl L. Sloan & husband, Donn of Richmond, and Loris S. Atkins & husband, Craig of Houston. She is also survived by her sister in law, Lois Shaw; grandchildren Christie Martinez & husband, Jesse, Chelsea Garcia, Colin Frazier, Leah Frazier Allen and husband, Ben; and beloved friend and caregiver, Lou Ella Wright. She also leaves behind 4 great grandchildren, and one niece and nephew. In addition to her husband and her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by a son, Ervin Schneider, and a brother, Leslie Mesecke. Evelyn’s family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 22, 2019, from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm at Baker Funeral Home in West Columbia,Texas. A graveside service will follow at 2:30 pm at Sweeny Cemetery. The family would like to thank the staff of Sweeny House who cared for Evelyn over the past ten years. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in Evelyn’s name to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd Houston Texas 77030. Baker Funeral Home
