Dorothy Ann (Matura) Kotrla passed away on December 28, 2018 at the age of 90 at Regency Nursing Center in Schulenburg. She was born on March 6th, 1928, to Emil F. and Annie (Janecka) Matura at their home in the Sedan area just west of Weimar. She started school in Sedan before she’d learned to speak English. With the help of a neighbor girl in her class, she learned English and became a good student. Her family soon moved to Weimar, where she grew up with her younger sister and brother, Annie and Emil Joe. She attended Weimar High School, where she was Valedictorian of the 1945 Graduating Class. She married Rinold John (Randy) Kotrla on October 18th, 1948, and had four sons, Larry, Michael, Johnnie and David. She worked all her life at many different jobs from a telephone operator in the 1950s, to a donut baker and egg processor in the 1960s, and finally as a USDA Inspector in the 1970s and 80s. She retired in the 1990s. She was an excellent cook, as she had much practice cooking for her four boys on an everyday basis, or family and friends on holidays, birthdays or other special occasions. She was always willing to help-out whenever and however she could. She was a child of the Depression and World War II. She was frugal in everything she did and got the most out of every task she’d ever undertaken. She never wasted anything, and made the most of every opportunity, finding many opportunities where none previously existed, like many of her generation. She enjoyed playing dominos, listening and dancing to Country Music, watching TV, and visiting with her many friends and family all over the Central Texas area. She was always proud of her Czech heritage, and visited the Czech Republic to see some of the significant places of her ancestor’s histories. She is survived by her three sons, Larry (Mary) of San Antonio, Michael of Weimar, and Johnnie (Beverly) of Katy: four grandchildren, Nicole (Luciano) Bayardo of San Antonio, Steven (and Amie) Kotrla of Kyle, Vance (Raighne) Kotrla of Los Angeles, and Lacey Kotrla of Hitchcock; and seven great-grandchildren, Ethan and Emily Bayardo of San Antonio, Tripp Kotrla of Kyle, and Eliot, Dylan, Vivien and Elsa Kotrla of Los Angeles. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her youngest son, David. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Mrs. Kotrla’s name to St. Michael’s School, or a charity of choice.
