EARL EDWARD SMITH, JR., age 89, of Las Cruces passed away Thursday, December 27, 2018 at La Posada - Mesilla Valley Hospice surrounded by his loved ones. He was born August 11, 1929 in Moriarty to Frankie Ivera Tilley and Earl Edward Smith, Sr. Earl served his country honorably in the United States Army and was an auto mechanic by trade. Those left to mourn his passing included his brother and wife, of Las Cruces; numerous nieces and nephews that cared for him during his illness; six grandchildren, of Mansfield, AR, of Deridder, LA, of Waldron, AR, of Odessa, TX, of Chico, TX and also of Odessa, TX. Earl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife. Katy Winnelle Sullivan Smith; an infant child, Anne Mae; brother, Samuel Smith; two sisters, Rose Collins and Joy Hignight; and two step-daughters, Beth and Donna. The Funeral Service for Mr. Smith was held at Baca's Funeral Chapel. Concluding Service and Interment followed at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens Cemetery, where he was laid to rest alongside his wife in the family plot. Military Honors were accorded by the Unites States Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Marine Corps League - El Perro Diablo Detachment. Serving as casket bearers will be family and friends. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Baca's Funeral Chapels of Las Cruces. Published in Las Cruces Sun-News on Jan. 1, 2019.
