Krenk was born to Frank and Rose Houska on February 20, 1921, in Dwight. She died at 97 years old on December 15, 2018, at the Journey House in Lincoln. She grew up on the family farm near Seward. At the age of 13, she went to work helping to save the farm during the depression years. She worked as a nanny in a home where a newborn had arrived. Eleanor knew her husband-to-be, Jim Krenk, all her life. They easily fell in love because of their shared joy in dancing and married on January 1, 1941. People often commented that they looked like a "cloud floating on the dance floor!" Shortly after their marriage, Jim was stationed in the Army in Portland, Oregon. Eleanor worked as a ship fitter's helper and in a paper factory. Later they moved to Omaha where Eleanor worked for the Creighton's and Jim became a realtor. Raised in the adversity of the depression years, her gardening and sewing skills helped with the raising of her family of one girl, Beverly, and one boy, Kenneth. She was always at her husband's side for his insurance business, convention duties and retired from working in a children's nursery after many years. Eleanor found time for canning, upholstery and drapery skills, baking bread, kolaches, plum and gooseberry buchty and tons of melt-in-your-mouth sugar cookies. Eleanor and Jim enjoyed dancing and card playing way into their retirement. She loved traveling in their motor home and visited 49 states as well as visiting Czechoslovakia. For 60 years she belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary, bowling and participating in Eastern Star activities. Since 9/11, she proudly flew the American flag in her front yard. Preceding her in death were her husband, Jim (VK) Krenk, infant brother Willy, sister Lucille (Lad) Vogeltanz, sister-in-law Lillian (Francis) Albert and brother-in-law Edwin (Marlene) Krenk. Survived by daughter Beverly (Gale) Alm, son Kenneth (Julia) Krenk, grandchildren Kirk Alm, Kreig (Tiffany) Alm, Laura (Casey) Chytka, James (JR) (Lindsey) Krenk, Spencer Krenk, six great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Viewing: 5-8 pm Wednesday (12/19) at Butherus, Maser & Love Funeral Home, 4040 A Street, Lincoln, and 10-11 am Thursday (12/20) prior to funeral at 11 am Thursday at Vine Congregational United Church of Christ, 1800 Twin Ridge Rd., Lincoln. Interment: Lincoln Memorial Park.
