Services for Charles Donald "Donnie" Gilbert, 77, of Palestine will be at Friendship Baptist Church with Pastors Jerry Horne and Lynn Stroud officiating. Masonic graveside services with military honors will follow at Rock Church Cemetery. He was born to Charlie and Cora Orilla Ewers Gilbert. He was reared in the Blackfoot community and lived in Anderson County most of his life. He graduated Palestine High School in 1960 and went on to serve his country in the US Air Force. Later he worked for the Palestine Fire Department. He retired from a career as a Texas peace officer, including Game Warden, TABC and Reserve Officer in the counties of Gregg, Harrison, Marion and Henderson. He was a musician and enjoyed jam sessions and making music with his friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Kay Harris; and former wife and beloved friend, Jojuana Johnson Gilbert. He is survived by son, Charles D. Gilbert, Jr. of Jefferson, Tx.; daughters, Nisha Holmes (Mark) of Shreveport, La. and Chana Windham (John) of Bossier City, La; sister, Beckie Gilbert and four grandchildren, Seth Holmes, Sarah Windham, Jessica Windham and Rebecca Windham as well as numerous extended family.
