John J Hoffman was the son of George W Hoffman and Susanna Becker. John married Emilia D Miller on March 22, 1885 at Castle Rock, Dakota County, Minnesota. ---- Obit was located in "Dakota County Tribune" March 31, 1950 on Page #1 of Section #2, and reads as follows: "John Hoffman laid to rest. John J. Hoffman, age 89, pioneer of Dakota county, was laid to rest in the Emmanuel cemetery, Farmington, following services in the Salem Evangelical U. B. church, here at 2:00 p.m., Friday March 24, with Rev. H. S. Frank officiating. A consolation service was held for the family at the Hoffman home in the morning at eleven o'clock. Mr. Hoffman died at his home in Farmington, March 21, 1950. Pallbearers were six nephews: D. L. Hoffman, Milton Hoffman, Leslie Hoffman, L. J. Stapf, Ray Dickman and George Betwold. Miss Arlene Nellis of South St. Paul, sang two hymns, Going Down the Valley and Beyond the Sunset: she was accompanied by Mrs. Nels Sallberg, who also played the funeral music. John J. Hoffman was born Dec. 30, 1860, in Hampton township, Dakota County, a son of George and Susanna (Becker) Hoffman. He acquired his schooling at the nearby district school and was a farmer all during his life until retirement. On March 22, 1885, he was united in marriage with Emelia D. Miller in the Emmanuel Evangelical church in Castle Rock township. They established their home on a farm in Hampton township later moving to a farm in Castle Rock township, where he resided until 1925, when he retired and moved to Farmington, residing here until his death. Mr. Hoffman is survived by six children: Clinton, Laura, Mrs. A. S. (Susanna) Duff of Farmington; Clifford of Hampton; Ludwig of Great Falls, Montana; six grand children and two great grandchildren; one brother George of Farmington; four sisters: Mrs. Amelia Knoblauch of Farmington; Mrs. Mary Gleim of Hastings; Mrs. Anna Dickman of Randolph and Mrs. Sam Betzold of Lake Mills, Wis., and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, who died Sept. 10, 1917; a son in infancy; two sisters and two brothers, also his parents. Mr. Hoffman will not only be missed by his family but a host of friends, who will always remember his Christian kindness and his neighborly deeds. He became a member of the Evangelical church in 1884 under the pastorate of Rev. Lenz and he has always been true to his faith. He was always interested in the community in which he lived and in earlier days was active in civic affairs. He served on the school board many years. The large crowd at the funeral bespoke of the high esteem in which he was held." --------- Minnesota Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 about John Hoffman Name: John Hoffman Census Date: 1 May 1875 County: Dakota Locality: Hampton Birth Location: Minnesota Gender: Male Estimated birth year: abt 1861 Race: White Father's Birth Location: Hesse Mother's Birth Location: Hesse Roll: MNSC_6 -------- 1900 United States Federal Census about John Hoffman Name: John Hoffman Home in 1900: Castle Rock, Dakota, Minnesota Age: 39 Birth Date: Dec 1860 Birthplace: Minnesota Race: White Gender: Male Relationship to Head of House: Head Father's Birthplace: Germany Mother's Birthplace: Germany Spouse's name: Emelia Hoffman Marriage Year: 1885 Marital Status: Married Years Married: 15 Occupation: View on Image Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age John Hoffman 39 Emelia Hoffman 34 Clinton Hoffman 14 Laura Hoffman 9 Clifford Hoffman 6 Ludwig Hoffman 4 Susana Hoffman 3 ------- Minnesota Territorial and State Censuses, 1849-1905 about John J Hoffman Name: John J Hoffman Census Date: 26 Jun 1905 County: Dakota Locality: Castle Rock Birth Location: Minnesota Gender: Male Estimated birth year: abt 1861 Race: White Father's Birth Location: Germany Mother's Birth Location: Germany Roll: MNSC_115 ---- 1910 United States Federal Census about John J Hoffman Name: John J Hoffman Age in 1910: 49 Estimated birth year: 1861 Birthplace: Minnesota Relation to Head of House: Head Father's Birth Place: Germany Mother's Birth Place: Germany Spouse's name: Emelia D Hoffman Home in 1910: Castle Rock, Dakota, Minnesota Marital Status: Married Race: White Gender: Male Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age John J Hoffman 49 Emelia D Hoffman 42 [44] Clinton G Hoffman 24 Laura A Hoffman 19 Clifford C Hoffman 16 Ludwig M Hoffman 14 Susanna M Hoffman 12 ----- 1920 United States Federal Census about John J Hoffman Name: John J Hoffman [John J Hoffner] Home in 1920: Castle Rock, Dakota, Minnesota Age: 59 Estimated birth year: abt 1861 Birthplace: Minnesota Relation to Head of House: Self (Head) [Head] Father's Birth Place: Germany Mother's Birth Place: Germany Marital Status: Widowed [Widow] Race: White Sex: Male Home owned: Own Able to read: Yes Able to Write: Yes Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age John J Hoffman 59 Laura Hoffman 29 Clifford Hoffman 26 ----- 1930 United States Federal Census about John Hoffman Name: John Hoffman Home in 1930: Farmington, Dakota, Minnesota View Map Age: 69 Estimated birth year: abt 1861 Birthplace: Minnesota Relation to Head of House: Head Race: White Household Members: Name Age John Hoffman 69 Laura A Hoffman 39 ------------ Minnesota Death Index, 1908-2002 about John J.
