Della was born in Mevlan Clark, Wisconsin, to John Henry May and Minnie Remnert. She had at least five siblings (three brothers and one sister): Elva (b1899), Harold (b1902), Everett (b1904), George (b~1907) and Roy (b1908). She married Alvin W. Rottiger.
