------- Winifred [sic] Johnston, 27, living one mile south of Stinnett was found dead in his home this afternoon about 2:30, death resulting from a gunshot wound. He had been shot through the head with a .22-caliber bullet. A rifle was found near the body and powder burns were evident around the wound. Johnston is survived by his wife, and two children, Wesley Duwain and Joe Ann. His father, Lytle, was known in the country back in the pioneer days of this section. He was a minister and preacher. Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. J.C. Lowery, of Stinnett, one brother, Ben Johnston in California; three sisters, Mrs. John A. Swett in Oregon; Mrs. Temple Piper of Gewhitt; Mrs. John Lester of Electra; and two half-brothers Griffin Hardin, attending school in Wichita Falls; and Grady Hardin of Dallas. (Published in Borger Daily Herald, Tuesday, September 8, 1936, Page 1) ----- Funeral services for Winifred [sic] Johnston, 27, who was found shot to death in his home one mile south of Stinnett yesterday afternoon, were held this afternoon at 3 o'clock at the Boxwell Brothers chapel in Amarillo, with the Rev. E.B. Fincher, pastor of the Elmwood Presbyterian church of Amarillo, officiating. Johnston was found dead yesterday afternoon, having been shot through the head with a .22-caliber bullet. A rifle was found near the body and powder burns were evident around the wound. Pallbearers were H.C. Barnes, T.S. Smock, C.L. East, Allerson Crank, Walter Christian, and Clarence Bates. Burial was held in the Llano cemetery. Carver-Powell funeral home was in charge of the arrangements.
