Bio

Anita Vestal Smith passed away September 22, 2018, in Sherman at age 98. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, September 29th at Waldo Funeral Chapel. Burial will follow at Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Anita was born May 16, 1920, to John T. and Pina Dickenson Vestal in Whitewright, Texas. She graduated from Whitewright High School in 1937. On Dec. 3, 1937, she was married to Dee W. Smith, son of Arthur L. and Jewel Smith of the Nobility community. For thirteen years Anita and Dee lived on farms near Whitewright and Leonard before moving to Dallas in 1950. In 1956 they moved to Garland, where he owned and operated a grocery store and meat market until his death in 1972. Anita worked at Kenyon Furniture Stores, Inc., in Dallas before retiring to assist her husband in the grocery store, and after his death she returned to work there, completing a total of more than 22 years with the company and retiring as Accounts Payable Bookkeeper. She then did private bookkeeping until she retired completely at the age of 86. She pursued her hobbies of working crossword puzzles (and every other kind of word puzzles), and watching game TV game shows (especially “Jeopardy”). She was a member of the First Christian Church of Garland and attended the Ruth Mix Sunday School Class for 50 years. In 2001 Anita began living with her son, Jerry L. Smith, and daughter-in-law, Mary, in Richardson, and she moved to Sherman with them in 2006, becoming a member of Central Christian Church in Sherman at that time. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and two brothers: Clyde T. Vestal and Van R. Vestal. Survivors include her son Jerry and wife Mary of Sherman; grandson Randall L. Smith and wife Kellie of Farmersville, TX; grandson G. Alan Smith and wife Jamie of Joplin, MO; granddaughter Kibby Lynn Smith and husband Dr. Joe Scott of Columbia, MO. Also three great-grandsons: Daniel Simons and wife Laurea; Zachary Smith of Farmersville, TX, and Caleb Smith of Joplin, MO; and one great-great-grandson Braydon Hayward of Farmersville; and numerous nieces and nephews. Also her special extended family, Rolin and Mary Green of Allen, TX, and their daughters: Rebecca Short and husband Andrew (and their daughters Elizabeth and Katie) of Allen, TX; and Stephanie Clark and husband Kevin (and sons Declan and Finley) of Sachse, TX.
