Bio
Surrounded by her family, Emma Ruth Parker Sommers passed from this world to God’s heavenly gate on July 3, 2016. Sister Ruth, “Ruthie,” Mom and Mameaux was born on Sept. 24, 1938, in Lake Charles, La., to the late Elbert and Dorothy Parker. A Moss Bluff girl, she was a 1957 graduate of Gillis High School, where she was a class sweetheart and friend to all. She had many jobs over the years, but the one she will always be remembered by was that of a loving wife, mother, grandmother and now greatgrandmother. She was a prayer warrior to the end, loving being in the house of God, teaching Sunday school at the First Pentecostal Church of Lake Charles, assisting with Silver Clouds and being in the prayer room with her sisters in the church. She leaves to cherish her memory, the love of her life, Harry S. Sommers Jr., whom she met when he was stationed as an air policeman at the Chennault Air Base. They married on Nov. 26, 1957, in Beaumont, Texas. She supported Brother Harry by leaving Louisiana as he pursued his law enforcement career in Fairfax County, Va. After a successful career and retirement, they returned to Moss Bluff, where church and family became her passion. To this union they were blessed with their first son, Harry S. “Trip” Sommers III and his wife Divah of Atlanta; granddaughter Katherine Freeman, her husband Ryan; and great-granddaughter Alice Mae, all of Chattanooga; grandson, Michael R. Sommers and wife Monet of Knoxville. Also their second son, William A. “Bill” Sommers Sr. and his wife Belinda; granddaughter, Savannah Foreman, her husband Justin; and great-grandson, Parker of Moss Bluff; grandson, William A. “Billy” Sommers Jr. and his wife Madison now of Silver Spring, Md.; and granddaughter, Sarah Sommers of Moss Bluff. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Elbert and Dorothy Parker; sisters, Adele Roberts, Vernel Sensat and Vergie Franklin. She is survived by sisters, Linda Abel (John) of Baker, La., and Sue Greene (Art) of Moss Bluff; and a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at First Pentecostal Church on July 5, 2016, under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home, beginning at 5 p.m. and on July 6, 2016, beginning at 9 a.m. Services will be at the church on July 6, 2016, at 11 a.m. Burial will be at the Old Ritchie Cemetery in Moss Bluff. Services will be led by Pastor Jeffrey Ralston, Pastor C.D. Thornton and the Rev. Jarred Grissom of First Pentecostal Church of Lake Charles on Bunker Road. We find comfort in knowing that she is walking those heavenly streets of gold and know that she will be watching for us as we will one day be there too. The family would like to thank Dr. Charles Woodard for his loving care over the years and a special thanks to Dr. Ben Thompson, Nurses Taylor Bellaire and Katherine Fortner, great home health nurses, Pam and Christy, as well as all of the doctors, nurses, and other staff at Lake Charles Memorial Hospital.
