ACTIVE ALPINE RESIDENT DIES Native of England Served Five Terms as Mayor of tiny City AMERICAN FORK, - Benjamin Bates, 76, long-time resident of Alpine, died at the family residence there early Wednesday morning after a long illness. Until the last three years he had been one of the most active citizens of the community, said to be the smallest incorporated city in the world. At various times Mr. Bates had been mayor of Alpine, a member of the board of school trustees, and after the consolidation, which he was instrumental in securing, a member of the board of education in the Alpine district. Besides being mayor for five terms, Mr. Bates held other civic positions, serving two terms in the city council, two terms as recorder, and was a member of the board of the Alpine Irrigation company, He was also active in church work, holding several positions at various times. He was born in Birmingham, England, June 24, 1854, coming to this county when a young boy. On October 13, 1888, he married Hannah Bodleson in Salt Lake. Surviving him are his widow, the following children: Mrs. Florence Smith, Salt Lake; J. Leonard Bates, F. Russell Bates, Mrs. Madeline Wilkins and Mrs. Ethel Peck, all of Alpine, and the following brothers and sisters: Samuel Bates and George Bates, Salt Lake; Frank Bates, Wyoming; Leah Blakemore, Los Angeles. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in the Alpine gymnasium, interment to be in the Alpine city cemetery. October 9, 1930 Salt Lake Tribune
