BOELUS — Leon H. Sonnenfeld, 57, of Boelus passed away on Monday, Sept. 10, 2018, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Revs. John Kakkuzhiyil and Richard Piontkowski will officiate. Military honors will be presented at the graveside. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Leon H. Sonnenfeld was born Jan. 14, 1961, in Ord to Martin and Caroline (McCarville) Sonnenfeld. He grew up with eight siblings and they ran a family dairy farm. Leon attended school in Ord and graduated in 1979. Following graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, where he served as a MP from 1982 to 1985. Leon married Diana Kay Barthel on June 28, 1986. They lived and farmed in Ord for a year before moving to Boelus. They moved to Boelus to live on a dairy farm, where they milked cows until the fall of 2008. Leon continued to farm at home while also being employed at 5B Feedlot in Grand Island until he passed. Once married and while living near Boelus, Leon served with the Boelus Volunteer Fire Department for a handful of years and was a member of the American Legion. Leon loved taking care of his cattle and farm at home. He enjoyed spending time with Diana, the kids and grandkids. Leon loved to laugh with others and be with his family on the farm. He loved listening to polka music and going on hunting trips. He is survived by his wife, Diana of Boelus; their five kids with significant others, Jason of Boelus, Roseanna and Matt Crawford of Maryville, Mo., Lorissa Sonnenfeld and Seth Littrel of Davey, Vanessa Sonnenfeld and Braden Bomberger of Lincoln and Joshua of Boelus; two grandchildren, Aurora and Eli Crawford, and one grandbaby on the way. Also surviving family members are eight siblings, Martin Sonnenfeld of Rapid City S.D., Adrian Sonnenfeld of Ord, Dwaine Sonnenfeld of Ord, Cecilia Sonnenfeld of Loup City, Charlene Moore of Virgina, Cheyenne Snow of Arizona, Emil Sonnenfeld of Ord and Troy Sonnenfeld of Grand Island; his brother-in-law, David Barthel; and sisters-in-law, Karen Walters and Sharon Butterfield of Chambers, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Martin and Caroline, and his father and mother-in-law, Calvin and Lenora Barthel.
