Bio
Johann was born to Johann Heinrich Steubing and Wilhelmine Catarine Bove (or Bure) in Bicken in 1826, then a town belonging to the Amt (county) of Herborn in the duchy of Nassau which was part of the German Confederation. The town is now in the modern province of Hessen in Germany. Together with his parents and siblings, he immigrated to Texas aboard the "Antoinette", which arrived at Galveston on 13-Jun-1848, afterwards settling in New Braunfels, where they were enumerated in the 1850 census. He married Katherine Elisabeth Strackbein on 18-Aug-1851 in Comal County, Texas, later moving to San Antonio. They are reported to have had eight children in the period of 1851-1866, although some of these must have died at a young age, since records have only been able to establish five as adults. Johann died at about age 40 in 1866 in San Antonio, where his burial location has not yet been established, although it is believed his grave is in one the San Antonio City Cemeteries.
