Jim Prather was born June 20, 1942 to Bill and Eva Prather in Callaway, and died in hospice care in Las Cruces, N.M., on July 10, 2021. He attended school in Callaway and graduated with the class of 1960. After graduation from high school, he attended IBM school in Omaha and upon completion packed up all his worldly goods and headed west to Seattle, a city he loved for more than 50 years. A few years ago Jim and his wife, Mary, traded the cool weather of the Pacific Northwest for the warmer climate of Las Cruces, New Mexico where he enjoyed not having to mow any grass and shovel snow. Despite having polio in his younger years, Jim lived a full life. His adventures took him fishing in British Columbia, moose and bear hunting in Alaska and numerous trips to Yellowstone and the Tetons. His greatest joy was being around his friends and he cherished the memories he was able to make with those sharing his journey. His other passion was travel and loved the open road. His goal was to put 500,000 miles on his Ford F350 and nearly realized his dream, falling short by 80,000. Jim was never about himself; he was always most interested in others; their lives and being the friend that was there for the highs and lows that life brings. Jim was known for being kind, generous, compassionate, funny, selfless, helpful and was mentioned by long-time friends as a father figure, mentor and consummate friend. If you were a friend of Jim's, you had a friend for life. Jim loved Callaway and made many return visits to spend time with his mom and reconnect with longtime friends during each trip. He was always proud when meeting new people to proclaim he was "from Callaway, Nebraska." Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 39 years; sister Gaylene Bruskotter; brother-in-law, Don and nephew, Zachary. He is also survived by his beloved "brother from another mother", Larry Mowrey, who was a steadfast friend and a source of comfort over the years to Jim as well as the rest of the family. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Nancy Riley. Per Jim's wishes, he was cremated. A celebration of his life will be held Sept. 25 in Callaway.
