Star Herald, Tuesday, June 15, 2004 Scottsbluff, Nebraska MITCHELL - Bertha Hettinger, 90, of Mitchell, passed away Sunday, June 13, 2004. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, June 16, at Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell with Very Rev. Gary R. Young officiating. Interment will follow at the Mitchell Cemetery. The family would appreciate memorial donations to Holy Apostles Episcopal Church, the Mitchell Rescue Unit or the donor’s choice. Friends who wish may sign the memorial register at the Jones Mortuary in Mitchell today, June 15, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Bertha was born May 23, 1914, in Ault, Colo., to Henry and Katherine (Cook) Hoff. She moved to the Sunflower Community, with her family, when she was five years old; was educated there and graduated from Sunflower High School.. She attended nursing school in Scottsbluff for one year, and on March 4, 1934, she married Alexander Hettinger in Mitchell. She and her husband farmed in the Sunflower Community. Bertha worked for 14 years as a cook for Mitchell Schools, followed by 14 years as a cook for Mitchell Valley School. She then worked for 21 years as a foster grandparent at Mitchell Grade School. She was a member of Holy Apostles Episcopal Church in Mitchell. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and James Elliott of Sioux County; son and daughter-in-law, Wilmer and Aloha Hettinger of Mitchell; brother, Alex Hoff of Mitchell; sisters, Amelia Margheim and Leah Eichman, both of Mitchell; and four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Her parents; husband; one brother and three sisters, preceded her in death.
