Fabian "Jay" Manning 1934 - 2018 VETERAN Early Life: Jay was born May 31, 1934, at the family home in Lehi, Utah, to Harry "Hud" Gilbert Manning and Georgida Udall Manning. Jay is the middle child of brothers: Dean (Marilyn) Chilton and Neil (Verla) Manning, as well as sisters: LuAnn (Myron) Carlson, Jena (Ken) Glover and Lura (Paul) Hardman. He grew up and attended school in Lehi where he was student body and Seminary president. He excelled in all sports. As captain of the football team, they took State in football two consecutive years and he excelled best as a softball pitcher. Life's Work | Service | Interests: Jay went on to attend the University of Utah and Brigham Young University. As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jay served an honorable mission in the Northern States Mission, which included Nauvoo. He served as elders quorum president, ward clerk and high priests group leader. Together, Jay and Bonnie served as ordinance workers at the Mount Timpanogos Utah Temple. Jay married Valdess Kay Sabey. They later divorced. Together, they had a daughter, Vicki Kay (Lee) Strickland; and sons: Bart Jay and Wade Arthur; grandchildren: Jacee (Sage) Strasburg, Lindsey (Ryan) Olsen, Chase Strickland, Jeramy and Zach Manning; great grandchildren: Kendall, Kambree (twins), McKay, Jaxson, Brooklynn, Brynlee, Wyatt, Evalyn. Jay married Bonnie Lou Bigler, his eternal companion of 47 years, November 24, 1972, in Elko, Nevada; they were later sealed in the Provo Utah Temple. Jay gained another family: Jeanne Lou (Randy) Maxfield, Jeff Larry (Trish, companion) Christensen; niece, Annie (Chad) Anderson; grandchildren: Jason, Josh, Kalee, Sarai and Angelina, Gordo, Pio, Junior (Maria); great grandchildren: McKylee, Korbin and Kinzlee, Tashlyn & Jayden and many dear nieces and nephews from both marriages. Jay was a hard worker, working for the farmers around Lehi, Auto Parts Service, Hercules Powder Company, Larsen's Gas Station, construction and cement and retired after 35 years at Geneva Steel as security guard and brick mason. Jay was a member of the Utah National Guard, receiving his training at Fort Ord, California. He was ever so proud of his pioneer ancestry; 2nd great-grandfather, Jacob Hamblin, from his mother's family. Hamblin was a great spiritual peacemaker with the Indians throughout the west and recognized through many books and historical sites. Jay had hobbies. He raised show horses and his horses won many blue ribbons and trophies. He participated in rodeos, riding bulls, even playing the part of the clown. He continued following rodeo performances and cowboys in person and on TV. Jay was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching and following BYU and many professional football, baseball and basketball teams. He coached his sons in Little League for many years. He had a nice boat and enjoyed taking family and friends skiing, fishing and to Lake Powell. He loved hunting elk, deer and pheasants, 4-wheeling and camping out. He enjoyed playing horseshoes and won many trophies. He tooled many personalized leather belts. He also loved to travel with Bonnie, going on many cruises and to many countries. Jay Manning passed away Thursday, July 26, 2018, from the effects of Parkinson's disease at his home in Orem, Utah. He was 84.
