Bio
Carrel Sherman Palmer, age 98, of Garden Grove, Iowa, the son of Carrel Vern and Sarah Olive (Collins) Palmer, was born December 29, 1919, at Van Wert, Iowa. He died at Westview Acres in Leon, Iowa on Thursday, July 19, 2018. Carrel grew up in Van Wert and attended school there. He met his future wife, Ruth Laverne Clarke, at a dance in Garden Grove. They were married on April 20, 1947. They were blessed with three children, Jean, Ed, and Donna. They made Garden Grove their home while he farmed and drove a Mormon Trail school bus for 39 years. In his free time, Carrel enjoyed making birdhouses and gardening. More recently he enjoyed having coffee with his friend, Kay, grocery store trips with Donna, and phone calls twice a day with Jean. Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Ruth in 2004; granddaughter, Robin; brothers, Robert, Wayne, Harold, and Raymond Palmer; sisters-in-law, Maxine Palmer and Evelyn Palmer; brother-in-law, Arnie Smith; and nephews, Gary Moore and Jimmy Palmer. Survivors include his children, Jean Mehegan of Harrison, Arkansas, Ed Palmer of Van Wert, Iowa and friend, Kathy, of Osceola, Iowa, and Donna and Tony Adkisson of Decatur, Iowa; sister, Christine Smith of Madrid, Iowa; sister-in-law, Ladine Palmer of Leon, Iowa; six grandchildren, Mike Heins, Mildred Hicks, Jared Palmer, Jessica Palmer, Justin Mason, and Jake Mason; 10 great grandchildren; 11 great, great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
