Bio

OLYMPIA -- McCleary resident Darrell Bert Herman, 62, a retired refrigeration technician, died Tuesday, April 5, 2005, in the Providence St. Peter Hospital at Olympia. His family said he had waged a courageous battle with lung cancer. Mr. Herman was born Jan. 15, 1943, in Tacoma to Berthold and Alice (Morovic) Herman. He grew up on the Harbor, graduating from Elma High School in 1962. Following high school he served in the Navy, then returned to McCleary. Mr. Herman had worked for Harbor Pacific in Elma. He was a member of a Masonic lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles. Known for his love and concern for family and friends and his sense of humor, he would often "hold court" in his garage, the door always open and a fire burning, welcoming friends dropping by to check out what he'd been doing or wrestle over a game of blackjack. On Sept. 4, 1993, he married Patricia Boland in Reno, Nev. She survives him at their home. He is also survived by a son, Grady Bert in Illinois; two daughters, Dessa Dawn in Illinois and Tanya Kagel of Bellingham; three stepchildren, Carri Williams of Port Townsend, Tony Williams in Texas and Harold Hayward of Kent; numerous grandchildren and a great-grandson. A wake is planned for noon to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, at the McCleary Community Center. Arrangements are by the Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma.
