Bio
Lois A. Alvarez, 64, of Grand Island, died Sunday, July 8, 2018, at home, surrounded by family. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Rev. Jim Golka will celebrate. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Apfel Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Lois was born on July 7, 1954, in Grand Island to William and Ida (Modesitt) Dombrowski. She grew up in Grand Island and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1972. On Aug. 4, 1984, Lois was united in marriage to Lazaro Alvarez in Hastings. The couple lived in Grand Island. They later divorced. Lois worked at J.B. Swift for 17 years until her health forced her to retire. Lois was a member of St. Mary’s Cathedral and served on the Altar Society at the church. She loved playing Bingo and going to casinos. She also loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed the company of her pets, Smokey and Tori. Survivors of the immediate family include her children, Larry Alvarez of Grand Island and Jennifer Alvarez (fiancé Trevor Stoltenberg) of Grand Island; stepsons, Lazaro “Pollo” (Maria) Reyas of Mexico and Maciel Alvarez of Georgia; grandchildren, Gemini, Serenity, Kane, Jaxson, Mila and Letty; siblings, Bill (Kathy) Dombrowski of Lincoln and Diane Dombrowski (Penny Franssen) of Grand Island; sister-in-law: Deb Dombrowski of Grand Island; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Frances Dombrowski; and brother, Robert Dombrowski.
