Bio
Elaine was born December 23, 1922 in Grand Island, Nebraska, the daughter of Herman and Grace Zlomke. Her Zlomke and Kappler Grandparents immigrated to America from Germany in the mid 1800's settling in Nebraska. Elaine was the oldest of four siblings; Aubrey, who died before he was two years old, Dean Zlomke, deceased, Donald Zlomke, and her sister Joan Charron.In 1946, Elaine married Lee Olson in Portland, Oregon where Lee was stationed in the Navy. They met at a dance and married 26 days later. The two traveled the world; living in Hawaii, Great Lakes, Rhode Island, Japan and San Diego where they owned two homes. Elaine worked for the Navy, and was an Executive Secretary for the C.O. of Hawaiian Sea Frontier, as well as for other high ranking officers wherever they lived.Together, they had one beautiful daughter, Diane Kay Olson, born August 11, 1949. She was born in Nebraska while Lee was out to sea. Diane proceeded both parents in death in 1974, following the couples' divorce.Mrs. Olson, along with other bold ex-navy wives petitioned Congress to review Navy policy regarding the treatment of ex-wives who had long term marriages who were left for other women, while taking all their Navy benefits with them. After a diligent effort, they influenced Congress to change the law so that woman were not left destitute following their divorces. Elaine's benefits were all re-instated.With great faith, and inner strength Elaine went forward with her life, filling her time with church, friends and family. Elaine was a long time member of the Bonita Orthodox Presbyterian Church. She often stated how blessed she was to have such good friends and family that loved her. The truth is, Elaine blessed everyone else's lives with her uplifting and joyful personality. Her laughter alone could light up any room. She had a quick mind and an even quicker wit, she was an avid reader, and always kept up on politics, finance and events in the world. A huge Padres baseball fan, she cracked a homerun at age 94 and ran all the bases at a family reunion in Nebraska! Elaine often said, "I have lived a pretty good life! I have to say, some things worked out, some things didn't, but you have to go on! Life is what you make it! So, make it fun! If you don't like what you are doing, get out and change it!"Elaine leaves behind her sister Joan Charron of Ravenna, Nebraska; brother, Donald Zlomke of Baltimore, Maryland.
