Bio

John Philip Hansen was born on June 7, 1927, to Ole and Maude (Woogerd) Hansen near Amelia, Nebraska on the ranch he was raised on and later took over. He was the youngest of four children. He attended country school until going to Atkinson High school, graduating in 1944. After high school he worked on the ranch until joining the United States Air Force in 1951. He was honorably discharged in 1954 and then returned to run the ranch. Along with ranching, he and his brother Eugene started Hansen Brothers Moving Company. Over the years they moved hundreds of buildings and houses throughout Hold, Boyd, Rock, and Brown Counties. Later on John took over the business and continued for more than 60 years. He was the only one in the area to do this kind of work, so he was highly sought after. Finally he was convinced to stop throwing crib blocks and leave that to the younger guys he had hired, but was always looked to for his knowledge, wisdom, and experience. In 1967 John married Marie (Wilcox) McCumber. They lived in Atkinson until moving to Parkside Manor in Stuart in 2013. John continued ranching on the home place until 1997 when Greg took over. He still spent countless hours fixing machinery, checking cows, planting trees for shelter belts, and putting up hay with Greg and Nick. In 2007 John received the AKSARBEN Family Farm Award for 100 years of continuous ownership of their land. He worked hard and took great pride in the fruits of his labor, whether it be driving through the cattle, putting up hay, or pointing out houses and buildings he had successfully moved. He was a self-taught machinist who would spend hours designing, making, and perfecting practical tools and equipment made from iron. John was also a 63 year member of the American Legion Post 86 in Atkinson. He was a thoughtful, generous man who was so proud of his family. He loved holidays when the kids and grandkids were there, especially on Christmas Eve when he could build up a fire in the woodstove and sit back and watch the kids run and adults play cards. He wanted nothing more than for everyone to enjoy themselves, especially Marie. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Albert and Eugene, one sister Edna Garwood, son Timothy McCumber, and son-in-law Kevin Schaaf. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marie Hansen, and their children, Elaine (Jim) Poessnecker of Stuart, Rhonda (John) Skrdla of Stuart, Rod (Juli) McCumber of Atkinson, Janet McGrath of Atkinson, Myra (Mike) Schmaderer of Lincoln, Dan (Karla) McCumber of Joliet, MT, Penny Wedige of Lincoln, Greg (Laurie) Hansen of Amelia, and Lana (Ryan) Dummer of Aurora, twenty-one grandchildren, and twenty-four great grandchildren.
