.John Dean Pudil, 78, of Cedar Rapids, died Thursday, March 13, 2014, at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, by the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: St. John Cemetery. A vigil service will be 4 p.m. Friday at Teahen Funeral Home, where friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, and at the church Saturday after 9:30 a.m. Survivors include his wife, Rose; a son, Douglas of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandsons, Paul and Ben; a brother, Jim (Linda) of Columbia, Mo.; and many nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his son, Paul. John was born Sept. 27, 1935, in Johnson County, the son of Franklin and Madeline Serbousek Pudil. He was a 1954 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Cedar Rapids. He joined the Navy directly after graduation and completed his four years of duty in 1958. He remained in California, getting a job with General Dynamics Corp. After five years, John moved back to Cedar Rapids in 1963 and was employed by Universal Engineering. He retired as parts manager in 2001 after 38 years. John was united in marriage to Rose Sebetka on June 8, 1964, at St. Pius X Catholic Church. They were married for 49 years. John was a devoted member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and over the years was involved with many church activities. He had many dear friends through his church involvement. John was a loving husband and father. He loved fishing, boating and a good card game of pinochle. He enjoyed helping neighbors with their outdoor projects and especially enjoyed golfing with his favorite foursome. Instead of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.
