Bio

Dorothea Brandl, 96, of Humphrey, died Saturday, June 9, 2018, at Countryside Home in Madison. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 15, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey, with Rev. Patrick McLaughlin celebrating the Mass. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, June 14, with a Christian Mothers Rosary at 4 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9 a.m. until service time on Friday at the church. Interment will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery. Dorothea was born March 1, 1922, on her parent's farm south of Humphrey, the fourth of eight children to Michael and Anna (Heine) Meyer. She attended St. Francis Catholic Schools, University of Nebraska at Lincoln, and graduated from Wayne State College. She began her teaching career at District #52 near Humphrey, District #53, and District #2 near Columbus. She taught at several other schools until 1950 when she found another love - John “Hop” Brandl. They were married at St. Francis Catholic Church in Humphrey on May 23, 1950. They had five sons and a daughter. In May 1959, they purchased their farm north of Humphrey. In 1964, her strong longing to teach returned and she went back to school obtaining her degree at Wayne State College. “Mrs. Brandl” taught at several area schools (Cornlea) before coming to Humphrey Public School in 1971 and retiring in 1990. She continued to substitute teach until age 80. Dorothea enjoyed time with her family, their farm life, and most of all her faith and instilling those values in her children and grandchildren. Dorothea is survived by son John (Carol) Brandl of Lincoln, son Michael (Sandra) Brandl of Colorado Springs, Colorado; son Kevin (Dana) Brandl of Humphrey, son Gregory Brandl of Opelousas, Louisiana; son Matt (Linda) Brandl of Bennington, daughter Annette Brandl of Omaha; special friend Ed Lopez and the Lopez family of Louisiana; 13 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren; sister Halcyon Johnston of Omaha, and brother Michael Meyer of Omaha. Dorothea was preceded in death by parents Michael and Anna Meyer, husband John “Hop” Brandl, sisters Wilhemina (Norman) Muhle, Eileen Meyer, Joan Meyer, and Anna Mae (Jim) Smith; brothers-in-law Jerome Brandl, Raymond Brandl, Leonard (Velma) Brandl, Joe (Madonna) Brandl, Mitchell Johnston; and sister-in-law Barbara Meyer.
