Obituary of Mary Jane Stripling by Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, San Augustine, Texas - June 7, 2018. Mary Jane Stripling, 91, a life long resident of San Augustine, passed away June 5, 2018. Born in the family home February 4, 1927, Mary Jane was the youngest of 6 children of Judge Raiford N. Stripling and Winfrey Leak Stripling. She attended Austin High School, as her older sisters were all enrolled at the University of Texas. After graduating Mary Jane chose SMU, and received a teaching degree, while being involved in the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority as well as being selected Rotunda Queen. She taught at Stephen J Hay elementary school in Dallas, before moving home to San Augustine. Staying involved, she was a member of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Daughters of the American Revolution and the San Augustine Garden Club. She was an energetic member of San Augustine United Methodist Church. Family and friends meant everything to Mary Jane. She stayed in touch with her college friends her entire adult life, and always kept up with all nieces and nephews birthdays and important events. She was always very proud of her siblings accomplishments and the family home she occupied all these years was treated as a tribute to them, and their parents. Mary Jane loved dogs, and had two special cocker spaniels that brought her so much joy. She managed the family business, Stripling's Drugs, for years after "Judge Stripling" passed away. She transformed the upstairs of the store into a small museum, to share the history of the town and family to visitors. She loved inviting guests to put some coins in the "old wishing well", an historic town well inside the drug store. Mary Jane is preceded in death by her mother Winfrey Leak Stripling, father Raiford Nichols Stripling, brothers Raiford and Robert Stripling, and sisters Frances Hartley, Sarah Morgan and Martha Albritton, and a niece, Essie Burnworth. She is survived by her neices and nephews. A memorial service will be held at San Augustine United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 9 at 1pm. Interment will be at Liberty Hill Cemetery.
