Obituary: J. C. Jepsen, 71 years of age, died Sunday morning at 9:30 o'clock at the home in the South Putnam building after a long illness. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ella Jepsen, and two sons, Arthur and John Jepsen, all of Davenport. The body was taken to Nissen & Hartwig's funeral parlor, from where the funeral services will be held Tuesday and services will be held at Wilton, Ia., with interment in the Wilton cemetery. - Transcribed from an image attached here, which does not provide newspaper information, though it must be from Davenport, between July 1 and July 6, 1920. The "South Putnam Building" was located at the corner of 2nd and Brady Streets in Davenport. ----------------------------------------- Information below regarding why this memorial was created and why it has been connected to Jep Callesen Jepsen. Jep Callesen Jepsen was born within the Bjolderup Parish, in the Aabenraa region of Denmark, to Jep Callesen Jepsen and Ingeborg Christina Boisen. He was Baptized at the Parish Church, on 5 July 1848. He married Sophia Cathrina Klaaborg in this same church, 28 April 1873. Jep and Sophia had at least 3 children while living in Bjolderup Parish. From Parish records: Johan Callesen Jepsen (b. 1873), Jep Callesen Jepsen (b. 1874) and Anna Callesen Jepsen (b. 1877 d. 1880). From Iowa birth and Christening records, they had at least one child in Davenport, Iowa: Arthur Jepsen/Jepson, born April 17, 1891. Jep Sr. departed from Hamburg alone, on 6 May 1888 and arrived in New York on the 19th of May. Sophie arrived with 3 children at New York, almost a year later, on 29 Mar 1889. Only Johan/John (b. 1873) matches the first 3, with Ingeborg (b. 1883) and Hans (b. 1886). The two sons mentioned as still living in the 1920 Obituary, match sons John/Johan (b. 1873) and Arthur (b. 1891). There is a Jep Callesen, by himself, in the Iowa 1895 census, in Cedar County (Wilton is mostly in Muscatine County, but it is just across the county line from Cedar), and one is widowed in the 1900 Census, at Wilton, Iowa. His older brother, Calle Jepsen Callesen (note the reverse of the last two names), arrived in the US earlier, and was living at Wilton, in 1888. This Jep C. Jepsen, married Ella (Liles) Follmer, on 6 Nov 1903 (his parents on this Marriage Record match those mentioned earlier). In the 1920 Census, enumerated on 2 Jan 1920, they are living in Davenport. The Cemetery index shows slightly different information than the Scott County Death Certificate Index. It shows "ca. 26 Feb 1920, 3 days before his death. This must have been when the family purchased the plot. Cemetery records: Name: JEPSEN, Jep Death: ca. 26 Feb 1920 per plot records; aged 71ys 7ms 9ds Death Certificate Information: Jpesen, J. C. Sr. Born: 20 July 1848 (Germany, which Bjolderup was a part of between the 1870's to about 1920) Died: 29 February 1920, Scott County, Iowa.
