Stony Garner May 5, 1938 ~ September 29, 2016 Stony Garner, 78, of Bay City, Texas passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and family September 29, 2016 at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston Texas. He was born on May 5, 1938 in San Augustine county Texas to James Washington and Syble Lee (Sparks) Garner. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He proudly served his country in the United States Army serving his tour of duty stationed in Germany. He took pride in his own construction company, Stony Construction, working for the railroad repairing train derailments; who would laugh when he would have to hire and fire his son Steve at least once a week. He was a man who would help anyone he could. During the flood of July 1979 in Danbury Texas, he went to his neighbors and friends and dug trenches with his backhoe, around the houses to protect from flooding. During this same flood he also drove his backhoe into town to get groceries for his neighbors. Anytime Stony had a chance to ruffle the feathers of his daughter PeeWee he would, and with Stony that chance was often. He taught his kids that hard work would always pay off. Chris remembers hearing that from a young age, riding with his dad anywhere he went sitting on the middle armrest of the El Camino he drove listening to his one 8 track tape “Waylon Willie and the Boys”. During retirement he could not sit still. He was always doing something, and that something was maintaining the grass farm in Bay City Texas, or watching old western movies and Fox News. He enjoyed good ol’ country music and dancing at any dancehall within a fifty-mile radius, where he and LaVerne would cut a rug around the dance floor into the wee hours of the morning. He always had time for company, especially his grandkids. He enjoyed when his family would come together always saying something to make his grandkids burst out in laughter during pictures, or scare them with his imaginary friend Sam. When Stony started getting sick he was not one to dwell on his sickness. He would cut jokes, laugh and take it one day at time. He stayed strong to his faith knowing where he was going. He loved life and his family. LaVerne told Stony I love you and his last words to his loving wife was “I love you too girl” Services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on Monday October 3, 2016 in the Palms Funeral Home Chapel with Brother David Davenport officiating. The family welcomes friends for a time of visitation on Sunday evening, October 2, 2016 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He will be laid to rest, next to his first wife Carol Jane Garner, in St. Anthony’s Catholic Church Cemetery immediately following the service. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, LaVerne (Leissner) Garner, his children Steve Garner, Chris (Mandy) Garner, Mark (Lisa) Krobot, Leslie “PeeWee” McKinney, Kim (Bob) Johnson, Kristi (Shannon) Champion and Korri (Ray) Weldon, his brother CPT. Wayne Garner, and sister Tempie Garner, as well as many nephews, nieces, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Stony was preceded in death by his first wife, Carol Jane Garner, his parents; James Washington and Syble Lee (Sparks) Garner, his daughters; Lisa Ratliff and Laura Catney, and 11 of his siblings.
