Lu Stahlnecker, 79, of Grand Island was born Oct. 15, 1938 in St. Edward to Nella Couton and Glenn Sherrill. She passed away in Grand Island on May 16, 2018. Services will be held Sunday, June 17, at 11 a.m. at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The services will be for both William and Lu. In Lu’s younger years, she lived in various Nebraska communities due to her father’s career with Union Pacific railroad. As the eldest of three siblings, she often talked about the time spent on the Couton family farm with her sister, brother and cousins. She was especially fond of summers spent there. In Lu’s early 20s, she moved to Grand Island and started working at Skagway as a cashier. It was there she met her husband, William “Bill” Stahlnecker, to whom she was married for more than fifty years. Bill and Lu were married Dec. 28, 1963, at the Trinity Methodist Church. Soon after, Bill was drafted into the army as a military policy officer and sent to Korea for over a year. During that time, Lu and her daughters (Debra and Kelli) lived with her sister, KoAnn, in Seattle, Wash. After Bill returned to Nebraska, they bought a house in Capital Heights subdivision and had a third daughter (Joell). During that period in their lives, Lu worked at Sears and Miller and Paine. Lu was a voracious reader. She always had a newspaper, book or magazine in her hand and was a frequent visitor to the Grand Island Public Library. Lu had a deep compassion for animals and nurtured many dogs and cats throughout her life. She was artistic and was often complimented on her beautiful handwriting and doodling. Lu was an avid gardener and had a passion for lighthouses. She loved to cook and bake and created many beautiful birthday cakes for her children over the years. Lu enjoyed listening to Garrison Keillor and the “Big Bands” and was a founding member of First Faith United Methodist Church and Women’s Faith Circle. She is survived by her children, Debra Thiem of Colorado, Kelli Swick of Florida and Joell Blevins of Arizona. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Clark, Taylor, Manya, Shayna, Raiselle, Kelsey and Teagen. In special recognition, she is survived by her best friend and cousin, Shirley Walrath. She was preceded in death by her husband, William; her parents, Nella and Glenn; and her siblings, KoAnn and Tom. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lu’s favorite charities: St Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Humane Society. Online condolences may be directed to www.livson.com. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.
