In Memoriam SSG (Retired) DICK VERNON FOGLAND December 12, 1932 ~ March 31, 2018 Funeral Mass for SSG (Retired) Dick Vernon Fogland will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday, April 7, 2018 in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with Rev. Brian Buettner, Pastor and Deacon Bob Quinnett officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens under direction of Becker-Rabon Funeral Home. A vigil service followed by a family greeting will begin at 5:00 p.m. Friday, April 6, 2018 in Becker-Rabon Funeral Home Chapel. SSG (Retired) Dick Vernon Fogland, age 85, passed away at his home in Lawton, surrounded by his family on Saturday, March 31, 2018. He was born on December 12, 1932 in Central City, Nebraska to Myron William and Gertrude (Schwasinger) Fogland. On July 14, 1962, he married Margaret Elizabeth Selby in Edgewood, Maryland. Together, they enjoyed traveling, watching their many grandchildren and great grandchildren grow up, and collecting Native American art. He was preceded in death by his wife in 2011. Dick honorably served his country for a total of 26 years, serving in the Nebraska National Guard for three years, the United States Air Force for four years and retired from the United States Army after nineteen years. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War where he earned the Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation, three Overseas Service Bars, and the Aircraft Crewman Badge. Dick then worked as the area maintenance technician for Southwest Oklahoma for the United States Postal Service, where he retired after twenty years of service. Long known for his kindness, humility, positive outlook on life, and sense of humor, Dick served many years as a volunteer at the Lawton Veterans Center where he worked in the craft shop and clothing room. Dick’s special interests and hobbies included woodworking, meeting his friends for breakfast, reading Western novels, and spending time with his loved ones. Dick was a parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church where he served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Our Lady of the Rosary Council of the Knights of Columbus and attained the rank of Fourth Degree Knight. In 2001, he received the Chairman’s Award in recognition of his crucial contributions in completing the renovation of the Knights of Columbus Hall. He leaves two daughters Helena Louise Wipf and her husband, LeGrant, and Margaret Evelyn Bush; grandchildren Carol Davis, Denise Thomas, Donald Wolfe and his wife Tanya, Cammie Schaaf and her husband Dan, Dawn Bush, Selby Bush and her husband Brad DeVault; fourteen great grandchildren, four great great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
