Mertens, Anthony "Tony" C. age 83 of Backus, MN, formally Big Lake, MN, passed away peacefully on Feb. 23, 2018 at the St. Cloud Hospital surrounded by his family. Tony was born May 17, 1934 on the family farm near Delhi, MN and was one of 8 children. Tony quit school at the age of 16 to help on the family farm after his father's passing. Tony was married for 30 years and had 4 children, He had a long career as a Teamster Star & Tribune truck driver. The family lived in St. Louis Park before moving to Big Lake in 1973. Tony re-married in 1988 and helped raise her daughter. Tony retired "up North" and enjoyed his hobby farm in Backus. Tony enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, rides around his property on his golf cart, taking country drives to sight see, watching sports on TV, taking in nature from his porch and mostly visiting with friends and family. Survived by his beloved companion, 4 children, 1 step-daughter, 9 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 5 step-grandchildren and many relatives, friends and extended family of the American Backus Legion. Tony was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Marlis; brothers Bob and Joey; sisters Frances Vi Serbus and Mary Ann Barrett. Per Tony's wishes, there will be no funeral, but a Celebration of Life at the American Backus Legion on April 7th from 1-5 pm.
