Hastings native Robert E. Brooke, 73, of Broken Bow, died Monday, Oct. 17, 1994, at his home. Mr. Brooke was born Sept. 21, 1921, to Donovan and Nellie Brooke in Hastings. He was the third of five children. He attended Longfellow Elementary School and Hastings Junior High School. He graduated from Hastings Senior High School in 1939. He attended Hastings College and the University of Nebraska. He graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Pharmacy in 1945, becoming the third generation of pharmacists in the Brooke family. In May 1944, he married Vernelle Louise Smith in Columbus. They had two children. They returned to Hastings, where he worked with his father in the Brooke Drug Store. His wife died in November 1967 after a long illness. In October 1970, he married Freida Faye Neth McCarty in Hastings. He continued to work as a pharmacist in Hastings until an illness forced him to stop in August 1993. In June 1994, they moved to his wife's family homestead farm near Broken Bow. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Masonic Lodge No. 50 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rite, the Tehama Shrine, where he was a member of the Shrine Campers and Shrine Greeters, Eagles Aerie No. 592,2, and Nebraska Pharmaceutical Association. He was also an adult leader for Boy Scouts. Survivors are his wife; one son Jim Brooke of Colorado Springs, Colo.; one daughter Janet Echternach of Konai, Alaska; two stepdaughters, Marlene Casey of Hutchinson, Kan., and Kim Gangwish of Shelton; four stepsons, John McCarty of Lexington, Mike McCarty of Grand Island, Dan McCarty of Houston, Texas, and Kevin McCarty of Kearney; one sister, Mary Urbom of Lincoln; 21 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
