Dr. Anderson Nicks was living in this county near his daughter Melissa, when he died. For this reason, it seems probable he and Melissa's mother were buried here where their daughter would be laid to rest at a later time. The couple had lived in this area of Texas for about 20 years and had finally put down solid roots after having moved around most of their married years. It was a terrible time of upheaval during and following the civil war and these events may have played a part in their deaths. They need a place of record and I have chosen this as the most likely place, at this time. If we find more information leading us to believe otherwise, the memorial can always be transferred. Nicks was born in North Carolina and moved with his family to Bedford Co., TN in 1801. He married his first wife, Elizabeth, there in 1817. They had two sons: George Washington Nicks (1826) and, Anderson Travis Nicks (1828). The family moved to Illinois around 1830 and he divorced Elizabeth in 1832. His second wife was Sarah Richards, but this marriage seems to have ended in divorce, as well. His third wife was Rebecca Wells and together they had two known children: Westley (1835) and Melissa ((1838). They soon moved to Johnson Co. Arkansas and then later to Limestone Co., Texas. Anderson died in Freestone County, Texas in 1864.
