Bio

CUERO - The family of Doris Marie Sykora Koliba, of Cuero, TX, is saddened to announce her passing on February 14th, 2018 at 11:05 p.m. in Hermann Memorial Hospital in Houston, TX. Doris, also known as "Mimi" to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, will be missed more than words can convey. Doris was born to John Thomas Sykora and Christine Marie Sykora on November 2nd, 1935 in Penelope, TX. For most of her life, she resided in the Dallas area, until her marriage to Benjamin Louis Koliba in 2001, whereupon she relocated to Cuero, TX and lived the remainder of her long, happy life. Doris is remembered as a paragon of grace, humility, and strength, raising three children and spoiling the grandchildren they gave her. Although she worked in the real estate industry until her retirement in 2001, Doris' true passion was preserving the memory and culture of her ancestral homeland, the Czech Republic, as a member of the KJZT Catholic Czech Club of Dallas, where she served as a long-standing member and Treasurer, as well as the SPJST Lodge 84, which just celebrated her 75th year of membership. In 2008, Doris and Benjamin helped sponsor the construction of the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center, the lobby of which now bears their name. Doris was also Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court #347 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero, TX. Doris could often be found in the church offices after services, helping to count the collection money, and as an Extraordinary Minister of the Holy Communion, she was a frequent visitor to the aging and infirm, who would receive the Sacrament as a result of her unwavering sense of charity. A rosary in Doris' honor will be held on February 20th at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Cuero, TX, starting at 6 p.m.. A funeral mass for Doris will be officiated by Father Jasper Liggio on the following day, February 21st, at St. Michael's, starting at 10 a.m., with a reception afterward in adjacent facilities. Afterward, Doris will be transported to Dallas and laid to rest with her mother and father at Cavalry Hill Cemetery. Published by the Victoria Advocate, February 20, 2018
