John Darrel Holtwick 30 October 1936 - 09 February 2018 *** U.S. Veteran Baxter Springs, KS: John Darrel Holtwick, age 81 of Baxter Springs, passed away at Mercy Hospital in Joplin, MO on February 9, 2018 following an illness. John was born on October 30, 1936 in Dover, KS to the union of Charles Janssen Holtwick and Sophia Elise (Deitz) Holtwick. He graduated from Topeka High School with the Class of 1953. Shortly after graduation, John enlisted with the US Navy. During his enlistment, he volunteered to serve in the Vietnam War, and continued his service until he retired as a Chief Petty Officer with 30 years of service. Upon retirement, he worked for many years delivering the Joplin Globe newspapers, as well as being a substitute mail carrier for many years. He was a longtime Baxter Springs resident, and everyone in town seemed to know him. He enjoyed coin collecting, as well as watching NFL Football, especially the Kansas City Chiefs. He married Janet May (Robinson) Holtwick on February 13, 1960. They had lived in Gardner, KS other than being stationed elsewhere in the military. She preceded him in death on October 15, 2014. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Sophia; four siblings, Mary M. Graves, Phillip B. Holtwick, Louise O. Sturgis, and Shirley A. Huttenhoff; and three children, Josh David Holtwick, Franz Dolph Holtwick, and Tanja Ann Holtwick. Survivors include one son, Tait A. Holtwick (wife, Audra) of Baxter Springs; one sister, Elise M. Mooneyham of Topeka, KS; and three grandchildren, Tait August Holtwick, Jr. T.J., Dolph Thomas Sean Holtwick, and Alexander Jensen Karl Holtwick. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 10:00 AM at Derfelts Baxter Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Juvenile Diabetes foundation in care of the funeral home.
