Bio

Betty Jo Owen entered into eternal peace on Sunday morning, January 21, 2018. Betty was born on January 1, 1932 in Munday, Texas to Jessie and Jewell Cumba. She was the youngest daughter and third child in a family of five children. Betty resided in Munday and attended Munday schools. She was married to Elwin Gerald Darter, and three children were born of this union: Larry, Dale, and Trayce. Elwin preceded her in death in 1963. On June 10, 1967, Betty married Walter Owen. They resided in Munday until 1972 when Walter's job at the post office transferred them to Denton, Texas. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2017. In Denton, Betty was an active volunteer at Denton Regional Medical Center (Medical City) for 36 years. She worked the front "welcome" desk and took great pleasure in assisting patients and their families. She enjoyed her coworkers and had many "front desk" stories to tell. Betty was a devout member of First Baptist Church in Denton until her stroke in 2016 made her unable to attend services. She and Walter enjoyed traveling, and she especially loved visiting Southfork, Colorado and camping in their motorhome. There, every Fall, they met up with a group of friends, and Betty could out-fish them all! Above all else, Betty was a wife and mother. Proverbs 31:28-29 28 "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her: 29 "Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all." Her family was her priority. She was always reachable and available to help, to counsel, to listen, and sometimes to sternly correct when needed. Betty is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Elwin, and her siblings (Gladys, Lola, Bob, and Benny). She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Walter Owen of Denton, Texas; her three children, Larry Darter of Munday, TX, Dale Darter of Boyd, Texas, and Trayce Hudy (Greg) of Denton, TX; six grandchildren, Mindy Campbell, Brent Darter, Shannon Nichols, Tony Cunniff, Cole Nichols, and Chancy Huffman. In addition, she is survived by six great-grandchildren, Taylor Burks, Justin Burks, Hunter Burks, Jackson Cunniff, Lily Cunniff, and Austin Nichols. A family graveside service will be held at Johnson Memorial Cemetery in Munday, Texas on Thursday, January 25, 2018 under the direction of McCauley-Smith Funeral Home. The family wishes to thank Ann's Haven Hospice, Denton, Texas, for their excellent and gentle care of Betty during her final days. Published in Denton Record-Chronicle on Jan. 24, 2018
