Connie Joan Lemke 1946 – 2018 After a courageous battle with lymphoma and its complications, Connie Lemke, 71, of Santa Monica died January 2, 2018 at Providence Saint John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, California. Connie Joan Mouck was born to Robert and Gertrude (Kelly) Mouck at Minot, North Dakota on July 18, 1946. She was raised in Minot along with her sisters, Mary, Shirley and Peggy. It was there that she married her first husband and gave birth to her daughters, Amanda Jean Lautenschlager and Megan Maureen Nichols. In her youth, Connie attended Catholic schools where her brilliant intellect was greatly celebrated. Her intelligence served her well as she went on to graduate with a bachelor’s degree from Minot State College, completing the program in less than two years. In 1987, Connie moved to Scottsdale, Arizona where she lived for a number of years. There, she met her second husband who was visiting a mutual friend and it wasn’t long before she moved to Santa Monica where she lived for 20 years. Over her lifetime, Connie held numerous jobs that provided her family with a stable foundation and taught her daughters the value of pride in work that enriches the lives of others. She was a lifelong learner and teacher; eager to share the knowledge she had gained from reading. She loved a good story whether from reading a book, or visiting with friends and family. Her desire to make things perfect was evident in her work, sewing, crocheting and knitting for friends, creating beautiful vestments and banners for her church, putting together the perfect meal, or her doodles, which usually consisted of practicing the cursive alphabet. A passionate humanitarian, her core values of humility, service, love, advocacy and peace were evident to every soul she met. All of her life, Connie worked tirelessly on issues pertaining to her beliefs. She was an avid volunteer, serving on numerous faith and community based committees and boards. As she did with most things, Connie had big plans after her 2013 retirement from serving the students and staff of Santa Monica College. She was able to fulfill many of her personal goals, and continued to participate in the California School Employees Association (CSEA) as a part of the executive board, negotiations team, and as chief union steward. Throughout her life, Connie’s creativity and love of art were ever present. While living in Minot, she filled the home with paintings checked out from the library and created works that are remembered with fondness. Her generous spirit and love of working with textiles continues to grow, as part of her vast collection of yarns and fabrics have been donated to Project Linus, which provides children who are seriously ill, traumatized or otherwise in need with handmade blankets and afghans. Connie was blessed with an abundance of friends. Many had the chance to visit as she embarked on her fight with lymphoma. Her joyful heart was grateful for the visits and time spent with those she loved. Connie adored her grandchildren. She was especially proud to see them all grow into adults, with whom she had shared values and a hearty sense of humor. Connie died knowing she was loved and her wishes were honored. Her final days were spent in the care of those with the good fortune to be a part of her family; daughters Amanda Lautenschlager (Sherwood “Woody” Schrenk), and Megan Nichols, stepchildren David (Pat) Cornog, Ann Cornog Tidwell, grandchildren Benjamin Lautenschlager, Ethan Lautenschlager, Alex Nichols, Amber Tidwell, sister Peggy Voigt, Shirley “Blondie” Leong, and niece Laura (Eli) Lessing. Connie was preceded in death by husbands Darryl LeRoy Lemke and Robert Alden Cornog, grandson Cullen Scott Lautenschlager, parents Robert and Gertrude Mouck, sister Mary “Kitty” Cole, nephew Nathan Voigt, and niece Brenda Voigt. Mass will be held at the Risen Christ Chapel at 12:30pm, on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Holy Cross Cemetery, Culver City CA. Reception information to follow. Those wishing to make a contribution are asked to consider honorariums to the American Civil Liberties Union, Amnesty International, the Humane Society or a gift of service that helps to make our world a better place. – Amanda Lautenschlager
