Bio

Oscar Joseph Grossman, Sr., age 95 of Temple, died Wednesday, January 10, 2018 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 10:00am Monday, January 15, 2018 at First Baptist Church of Academy with Rev. Brent Boatright officiating. The family will receive visitors from 6-8:00pm Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Scanio-Harper Funeral Home. Mr. Grossman was born on September 9, 1922 to the late Joe H. Grossman and Hattie Vojtas Grossman. He has lived in Academy since 1942. Oscar was a charter member of the First Baptist Church of Academy. On December 18, 1942, Oscar married Edith Ray Unberhagen and she preceded him in death on January 22, 2016. He was president of the Farm Bureau for three years, president of Academy School Board, and served for 15 years. Mr. Grossman farmed about 3,500 acres and ran about 1,500 head of cattle. He was a progressive farmer. He and his father owned the first cotton stripper in Bell county, he introduced double cropping and double rows to the area. He also brought in the use of liquid fertilizer for crops and manufactured fertilizer and also liquid feed for cattle. Mr. Grossman was also very civic minded. He supported and helped the Little River-Academy community. He donated land for the city to build the ball fields for the youth that is now named Grossman Park. He was a member and deacon of First Baptist Church of Academy. He graduated from Banquete High School and attended Texas A&I University. Oscar received the Outstanding Young Farmer award, was a member of the Kiwanis and Lions Club, was the Progressive Farmer Master Farm Family in 1958 and owned a fertilizer business, Grossman Ag-Chem. Oscar proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII, stationed at Pearl Harbor and Midway Island. Oscar was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Unberhagen Grossman. Survivors include a son, Oscar Joe Grossman, Jr. and wife Laura of Temple; a daughter, Sherri Watson of Academy; seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be Devon Jacobo, Dakota Davis, Steven Grossman, Andrew Grossman, Ricky Lariviere and James Rutledge. Honorary pallbearers will be Oscar J. ‘Trey’ Grossman, III, Dane Davis, Thomas Zaruba, John Ashley, Bill Entzminger, John Dorsey, Glenn Daniel, Terry Doskocil, Roger Houston, Larry Miller, Larry Parsons, Keith Hagler and Raymond Hernandez.
