Dr. Lavenia Cox was born May 4th, 1935. Her father Elmer Cox was a wildcatter who worked in the oil fields. Her mother Arlie T Cox was a bookkeeper. Although Elmer and Arlie never had any formal higher education they put a high premium on education and all three of their children grew up to serve in the US Military and all three pursued higher education going to college on the GI BiLL Lavenia was born in Alexandria Louisiana and graduated from High School at Arcadia Baptist Academy. After Graduation, she joined the Womens Army Corp and served her country as a nurses aide during the Korean War. As she left the military, she married and moved to Texas where she raised her family. She craved education though and was able to attend college at East Texas State University after all of her children started school. At ETSU, she earned a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Music and later a Masters and Doctorate in education. Professionally, she was once employed as a Choir Director at First Christian Church in Mt. Pleasant and then worked as a school teacher until she retired. Dr. Coxs volunteer worked included a stint in the Ladies Auxiliary at Hospital In the Pines, Lone Star, Texas and she directed the Candy Striper program. She was Commander of the American Legion Post 488, in New Boston, Texas, District Commander of American Legion and Commander of the a Womans veterans group. She moved to Fort Worth Texas in the last year of her life to be closer to her children and grandchildren. Dr. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, her son Elmer Stallman, her brother Sydney Cox, and her son in law Barry. She is survived by her 3 children; Arlena Stallman, Dianne Stallman and Michele Goodwin, her brother John R. Cox, her 6 grandchildren, Amanda Stallman, Courtney Waldron and husband Jason, Richard D. McClellan, Dylan McCellan, James Stallman and wife Elizabeth, Michael McClellan, and 12 great grandchildren. She passed away quietly in her sleep on January 9, 2018 in Fort Worth, TX. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2018 at Gorsulowsky Funeral Home in Vivian, LA officiated by Rev. Barry Carter. Burial will follow at Munnerlyn Chapel Cemetery in Ida, LA with Military Honors. There will be a time of visitation from 12 pm until time of service. Pallbearers will be her Grandsons, Richard, Dylan, James, and Michael, and Jason Waldron.
