Bio

Dwaine J. Schmit of Columbus, formerly of Bellwood died Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at Meridian Gardens. Dwaine J. Schmit was born October 30, 1927 at home on the farm southwest of Bellwood to Nicholas C. and Loretta M. (Fohl) Schmit. He attended District 36 Country School and Bellwood High School for two years before graduating from Kramer High School in Columbus in 1944. After graduating from high school, Dwaine farmed. On March 29, 1951, Dwaine was united in marriage to Selma Polacek at Sacred Heart Church in Shelby. Dwaine served in the US Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, Dwaine returned to the farm by Bellwood where he was a farmer and cattle feeder. Dwaine was a member of the Bellwood American Legion for 60 years, lifetime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, rural Bellwood, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Platte Valley Cattlemen and was involved in Butler County 4-H all his life. Dwaine was also a previous recipient of the Aksarben Farm Family of the Year and the Columbus Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Farm Family Award. Dwaine loved going to cattle sales where he always had a seat at the Columbus Sale Barn with a permanent bidding number of 12 and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Dwaine is survived by: Wife Selma Schmit of Columbus Daughter Sandra (Sod) Rech of David City Daughter Janet (Galen) Bock of Bellwood Daughter Barbara (Dan) Petrik of David City Daughter Victoria (Jerry) Johnson of Tucson, AZ Son Nick (Cheryl) Schmit of Bellwood Son Joe Schmit of Bellwood Daughter Jacqueline (Patrick) Hoeft of David City 14 Grandchildren 17 Great Grandchildren Brother Loran (Rene) Schmit of Bellwood Sister Marie Homan of Omaha Sister Cecelia Smith of Omaha Sister Jeanie (Theo) Jones of San Francisco, CA Brother Harry (Sharon) Schmit of Bellwood Brother-in-law Delmar (Evelyn) Polacek of Surprise He is preceded in death by: Parents Sister Bernice (Les) Peck Brother-in-laws: George Homan, Thomas Smith, and Bill Kayser Nephew Mike Polacek In lieu of flowers, Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph Church of rural Bellwood, Bellwood Volunteer Fire Department, or to the wishes of the family.
