Max Howell Martin, 86, of Diana passed away Saturday, December 9, 2017. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Gilmer. Max was born at home in Thomas, Upshur County, Texas NW of Gilmer, TX (Thomas is now known as Simpsonville) on February 18, 1931 to Harrison Shearl and Effie Lou Howell Martin. He graduated from Diana High School and joined the Marines Corp serving in Korea. He married Maurine Daily on April 7, 1961. He was a devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and known for his service to others. Max retired from Texas Eastman after 39 years. He is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Maurine; his parents; one brother; a granddaughter, Torri Martin; and grandson, Coy Flynn. Max is survived by two sisters, Bobbie Buck and Deborah Riddle; six children, Deborah Merrill (Brent), J. Wesley McWhorter (Karen), Kyle Martin, Kellye Jarvis (Michael), Brent Martin (Leta), Brad Martin (Cathy); 30 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren. Burial will be in Mattox Cemetery in Upshur County. Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Diana.
