November 11, 2017, Jane Esgate left this world to begin a new life in Gods heavenly kingdom. Jane (Giovanna Chianello) was second born of five to Guiseppe and Francesca (DAngelo) Chianello on September 23, 1923, in Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Early in 1943 she worked for the Tenth Port of Embarkation with Port Services, Purchasing and Contracting where she met her future husband, M/Sgt Harry Esgate. To enhance communication, Harry hired an interpreter to teach Giovanna English. Their courtship followed Italian tradition, always chaperoned by her family members. They were married on April 18, 1945, at the U. S. Army base in Livorno (Leghorn), Italy. May of 1946, their first born, Lillian, arrived. In July, 1946, they traveled to America by way of U.S. Seashark, a cargo ship, while Harry returned with the troops. Meeting up in New York City, they purchased a car and traveled to Yakima, WA, where they made home. The following June in 1947, Danny was born. Upon taking her citizenship in 1949, she was given the name Jane. She was a devoted American wife and mother. She surprised Harry by obtaining her first job for Barnes Wood as a seamstress via a telephone interview. Jane then worked her way through the local fashion industry and retired as a cosmetologist with The Bon Marche. She also gained much satisfaction as an accomplished fashion designer, a seamstress and alterations for family and friends including a natural talent for interior decorating. Jane was on a bowling team for several years and then joined a pinochle club where she met her best friend, Evelyn Maloney. As a member of St. Pauls Cathedral Church and the Young Ladies Institute (YLI) she provided food for funerals and assisted with vestments. Jane also volunteered in medical records at Memorial Hospital and crocheted and knitted layette sets for Birthright. As Hostess with the Mostest, she loved to entertain and prepared the most scrumptious hors doeuvres and meals. As children we could hardly wait for everyone to leave so we could eat the leftovers! Sunday dinner was traditionally in the dining room with the best china denoting it as a special day. As a couple the Esgates spent most weekends dancing. They were members of the Elks Club and Yakima Formal Dance Club. Janes talents as a seamstress were especially noteworthy when making costumes, formal gowns and even wedding gowns and wedding party dresses. Throughout the years she honored her grandchildren and great grandchildren with hand knitted or crocheted afghans designed with their color preferences and made a few baby blankets and sweater sets for the next generation before she no longer could. Always planning ahead! Jane and her family enjoyed many vacations on the beach at Birch Bay, WA, crabbing and clam digging and yes, even dancing. Jane and Harry made several trips to Salt Lake City, Utah, and Sicily, Italy, to visit her relatives and once to Germany to visit their son, Dan, as well as touring parts of Portugal and Spain. As snowbirds they traveled to Arizona and California enjoying the benefits of the Thousand Trails Campgrounds. They were especially partial to cruising and dancing on the Caribbean and Mediterranean seas when traveling with their dearest friends, the Holts. Most important of all was spending time with family. Jane was devoted to her family, especially assisting their special needs grandson, Joey. She loved the holidays decorating to fit the occasion and making surprise desserts like Italian doughnuts and cannoli. Sunday dinners and family celebrations were specially prepared and served on the best china in the dining room. Family gone before Jane are her devoted husband, Harry, her parents, two brothers ~ Nicolo Chianello and Antonio Chianello and his wife Angela and brother-in-law Franco Russo. The surviving families are two sisters ~ Pina (Herb) Newton (Salt Lake City UT) and Ida Russo (Bagheria, Palermo, Sicily) and many nieces and nephews in both countries. Her son, Danny Esgate, and daughter, Lillian (Bill) Hammett; and grandchildren are Joe Esgate, Tammy (John) Rose, Tanya (Erik) Michel and Melissa Winona. Great grandchildren are Jessica Tidrick, AJ Rose and Brandon (Brittney) Rose, Jason (Tiffany) Hall, Christopher (Ashley Selberg) Gardner and Ashlee (Kelly) Calley, Tyler Wiegand and Colton Michel. Great-great grandchildren: Hayden, Zackary, Raylee, Rhyder, Amaya, Marco, Owen and Kenley. God saw you were getting tired. And a cure was not to be. So he put His arms around you, and whispered, Come to me. With tearful eyes we watched you, and saw you pass away. Although we loved you dearly, we could not make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating. Hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best. Never forgotten forever missed. Free of pain and confusion, may you be dancing with Harry and praising the Lord with the angels and reunited with your family gone before you. Rest in peace. We love you dearly. You will always be near in our hearts and our memories. Services will be held Saturday, November 18, 2017, at 11:30 am at St. Paul Cathedral Chapel. Private interment at Calvary Cemetery will follow at a later date. Thank you to the wonderful staff at Crescent Health Care and Cottage in the Meadow for all their love, compassion, and care shared many times beyond what was expected for Jane as well as the family. In lieu of flowers please honor Jane with a donation to Birthright or to Alzheimers Association. To share a story or condolences with Janes family please visit www.shawandsons.com.
