Bio

Born Rachel Rebekah McDonald June 1, 1952 in Kingsville, Texas to parents Childress Ray McDonald and Mary Rosie Krestine McDonald. She is preceded in death by her parents, her brother David Ray McDonald, her first husband Edward Dale Chain, and her aunt Emilie Emma Krestine Rogers and her uncle David Rogers. Survivors include husband David Paul Highsmith; sister-in-law Evelyn Mae Woodlee McDonald; precious step granddaughters Eren Lindsay Highsmith, Bailee Rhianna Chapman, and Kyra Lee Chapman, numerous cousins, in-laws, aunts/uncles and friends. Rachel spent her first few years in Bishop, Texas and most of her youth in Pleasanton, Texas. She married and moved to San Antonio, Texas in 1971 and began a 38 year career at USAA Insurance/Financial Services Company. She attended night school for 13 years to receive her Bachelors of Science in Business/Management and her MBA in Management. She also received the designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) and Chartered Financial Consultant (CHFC). She was a member of Oak Hills Church (San Antonio, Texas) and previously taught children's Bible classes, primarily 3rd grade. She loved hearing Max Lucado's sermon series and later reading the books developed from those sermons. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her beloved grandchildren: Eren her Sunshine, Bailee her Moon, and Kyra her Sparkling Star. Hobbies included reading, gardening, quilting, and travel. Rachel survived breast cancer and several relapses. The family thanks Dr. Kalter and staff for their excellent care during her illness. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests you donate to one of Rachel's favorite charities: HANK, Inc. hankforkids.org and Oak Hills Church Children's Ministry Celebration of the Life of Rachel Highsmith was Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017 in the Bluebonnet Room of the Oak Hills Church at Crown Ridge, San Antonio, Texas with Dennis McDonald officiating.
