Bio

SPALDING — Cornelius “Kealy” F. Seaman, 98, of Spalding passed away Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2017, at the Greeley Care Home in Greeley. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding, with the Revs. Antony Thekkekara and James Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in the St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery at Spalding, with military rites conducted by the James Kessler American Legion Post 299 of Spalding. Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of the arrangements. Cornelius “Kealy” Francis Seaman, the son of Herman and Viola Pearl (Chaudoin) Seaman, was born on Sept. 9, 1919, at Spalding. He was baptized on Sept. 28, 1919, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. Kealy attended school at a country school until the eighth grade when he had to help support his family. He worked for a rancher in the hay fields and took a special interest in breaking horses and was very good at “bronco busting.” When the draft started, Kealy was one of the first men drafted from Spalding. He entered the United States Army on May 19, 1942. Due to his mechanical skills, the Army quickly found a spot for him in a newly organized outfit, the 333rd Engineers. Kealy earned a sergeant rank two weeks after arriving. When WWII ended, Kealy was honorably discharged on Nov. 29, 1945. He couldn’t get back to Spalding fast enough, to his bride-to-be. On Jan. 2, 1946, Kealy was united in marriage to Rosemary Mailander in a double wedding with her sister and another soldier at the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. The couple lived north of Spalding on their cattle ranch. In 1955 they sold the farm and moved to Toppenish, Wash., where Kealy worked for a John Deere Implement. They returned in 1956 to Spalding, where Kealy rented the Carlin building on the north side of the street and started Kealy’s Tavern. He then purchased the Mercantile building, where he moved his business and started the bowling alley. Kealy sold the business to his son in 1981, and the business was in the family for 60 years. In October of 2014 Kealy moved to the Greeley Care Home in Greeley. Kealy was a member of the St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. He also served as an officer for the Men’s Club and served as the mayor of Spalding. Kealy was a member of the volunteer fire department in Spalding. Kealy’s passions were raising and racing his thoroughbred horses and playing his guitar. He traveled to many area care homes with a group of friends, playing his guitar and singing old songs. Kealy is survived by his five children, Sharon (Mark) Carraher of Spalding, James (April) of Omaha, Lawrence (Mary Jo) of Lincoln, Vincent (Deb) of Omaha and Janet (Mark) Bauer of Spalding; 10 grandchildren, Jeff (Julie), Steve (Nancy), Kurt (Holly), Randy (Lori), and Colin (Monica) Carraher, all of Spalding, Scott (Heather) Seaman of Lincoln, Becca (Matt) Thiel of Omaha, Sarah Seaman of Omaha, Linda (Shane) Killion of Kearney and Terry (Amie) Bauer of Campbell; 24 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; along with many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Rosemary; an infant daughter, Margaret; a granddaughter, Kelli Seaman; an infant great-grandson, Ivan Carraher; an infant great-granddaughter, Shaylee Carraher; a sister and brother-in-law, Agnes and Joe Krick Sr.; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Bernard and Maxine Seaman, and Andrew and Helen Seaman.
