Grand Island Daily Independent 17 Jan 1989 North Loup — John O. Edwards, 94, of North Loup, died Sunday, Jan 15, at Grand Island. Services will be Thursday at 10 a.m. at the North Loup United Methodist Church. The Rev. Mike Anderson will officiate. Graveside services and military rites will be at 1:30 p.m. in Grand Island Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 - 8:30 p.m. at Ord Memorial chapel. Memorials are suggested to the church. Mr. Edwards was born March 6, 1894, at Cascade, Iowa, the son of John and Inez Smith Edwards. They later moved to Grand Island where he grew up and received his education. He entered the U.S. Army in July 1918, serving with the 361st Machine Gun Company as part of the 91st Division, and saw action in France. After his discharge he farmed in Iowa before returning to Nebraska. On Sept. 6, 1920, he married Bertha Meese at Grand Island. They lived in the Ord, Ericson and North Loup communities. HE also was a carpenter and was in the seed corn business in addition to his farming interests. He was a member of the North Loup United Methodist Church and the North Loup American Legion post. He was on the Popcorn Days committee in the North Loup and was a longtime member of the Lions Club. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman. He was survived by his wife, five daughters, one son, 27 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three grandsons, four sisters and a brother.
