FROM WW II TO VIETNAM, AIR FORCE WAS HIS LIFE Wallace F. Treybig, a retired Air Force veteran who turned his love for airplanes into a military career, died Monday of cancer. He was 68. At the age of 17, Treybig had just graduated from high school when he convinced his father to sign him up to fight in World War II. ''The military was his life. It was in his blood,'' his daughter Ruthe Brunson said. During World War II, he was stationed at an Army Air Corps base in Marrakesh, Morocco, as an airplane mechanic. It was there he developed a close camaraderie with other soldiers. ''He looked after his men as well as his planes,'' his wife, Corrinne Treybig, said. The couple married after he served in the Korean War. In 1968 he was assigned to an Air Force base in South Vietnam, where he had his first experience with combat. A bomb exploded near his barracks and Treybig immediately dived under a bed to avoid injury. His family teased him when he arrived home from Southeast Asia with only a broken finger. Treybig continued to keep in close contact with military veterans after he retired in 1973 as a senior master sergeant. He was past commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10180 in Maitland. And in 1992 he was selected All American Post Commander by the national VFW. He also was a member of the American Legion. ''He was the type of person who was never among strangers,'' Brunson said. ''He'd give you the shirt off his back.'' Beside his wife and daughter Ruthe, Treybig is survived by another daughter, Doreen of Longwood, and two grandchildren.
